Problem Statement:

The Module 5 Recycling Facility required the excavation and stockpiling of over 1,057,000 cubic yards of native soil to accommodate a future phase of public recycling and waste disposal. Additionally, the project included paving a new roadway for access, implementing erosion control measures such as hydroseeding, and improving monitoring wells and drainage systems. Challenges arose during the excavation process as the native soil, initially workable, became increasingly compact and difficult to cut. This slowed operations and created inefficiencies in stockpiling the material for future use, increasing wear and tear on equipment.

Solution Statement:

Lund Construction leveraged its expertise in heavy excavation and hauling to adapt mid-project, ensuring successful completion despite challenging soil conditions. After a detailed analysis, Lund replaced the initial fleet of CAT 657 Scrapers with CAT 745 Articulated Trucks. This adjustment improved efficiency, maintained consistent excavation and hauling activities, and minimized equipment wear, ultimately meeting project deadlines while ensuring a durable and high-quality outcome. Lund’s ability to develop and implement flexible strategies, coupled with its extensive knowledge of heavy earthmoving operations, proved pivotal in delivering a successful project.
